Aloe helps block cancer

ALOE - PROPERTIES - CANCER - HELP - STUDY

Roman Bystrianyk, "Aloe helps blocks cancer", Health Sentinel, November 17, 2005,

According to the CDC more than 570,000 Americans will die of cancer in 2005. Cancer is a major public health problem that is not only a leading cause of death in the United States, but also in both developed and developing countries. Environmental pollutants are one of the main factors in cancer. One such environmental carcinogen is Benzoapyrene or BaP. BaP is formed as a result of smoking cigarettes and other tobacco products as well as by the combustion of organic matter in automobile exhaust.

Chemoprevention has garnered increasing attention in recent years. Chemoprevention refers to the use of nutrients or chemicals, which help prevent cancers from forming. In the November 2005 issue of Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health authors study the chemopreventive effects of aloe.

According to the study, aloe is a well-known natural dietary and chemopreventive agent. It is a source of polysaccharides and has been found to have, “anti-inflammation, wound healing, antihepatitis, antigatric ulcer, antineoplastic (stops the conversion of normal cells into tumor cells), anti-initiating, and antipromoting properties.” Polysaccharides are given to cancer patients due to their direct toxic effects on cancer cells and indirect improvements on the immune system.

Another important nutrient is glutathione or GSH. GSH is a major antioxidant that is found in large amounts in all cells. GSH has many functions in metabolism, free radical scavenging, and regeneration of other antioxidants such as vitamin E. “The most important function of GSH is to provide protection against oxidative damage induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS), many of which are generated during normal cellular metabolic processes.”

The authors performed a number of experiments to determine the effectiveness of aloe in protecting against cancer. They found that aloe inhibited chromosomal damage in a dose dependent manner. This means the more aloe that was used the less mutation appeared. They found that the highest concentration of aloe compared with the control inhibited mutagenicity by 47%. The authors also found that GSH concentrations were “markedly higher” in animals that had been administered aloe. In fact, the GSH concentrations were found to be double in the animals treated with the largest amount of aloe compared to the animals that received no aloe.

The authors conclude that, “the most promising approach to reducing the number of cancer cases worldwide may be to inhibit the occurrence of cancer by pharmacological intervention, chemoprevention.” Cancer due to exposure to carcinogens may be “slowed, blocked, or reversed” by administration of one or more naturally occurring or synthetic chemicals. “This study provides evidence showing that aloe exhibits chemopreventive activity against the mutagenicity by BaP”, and that the GSH levels were “increased significantly” with increasing amounts of aloe.
