None of the thousands of "alternative" treatments available for bird flu are backed by evidence that they work, a leading expert on alternative medicine has said.

Professor Edzard Ernst, professor of complementary medicine at the University of Exeter, said that some medicines could actually be detrimental to health, as they stimulate the immune system which could be counter productive.

Reliance on unproven alternative cures, many of which are advertised on the internet, could also prevent people from seeking effective treatment from doctors, he said.

"Hundreds of different treatments have been promoted as a treatment or as a prevention for bird flu," Prof Ernst said.

"We looked at the evidence for or against these treatments and we found that virtually none of these thousands of treatments is backed by good evidence. Most of these website were commercial."

Dr Ron Cutler, from the University of East London, said there was a case for further investigation into garlic, reservatrol from red wine and green tea as possible anti-viral agents, but said people should be wary of untested herbal remedies.

"One of the problems is that herbal companies are generally quite small and cannot afford clinical trials," he said.

"Taking a drug to market costs hundreds of millions of pounds to do and small herbal companies cannot afford this."

Prof Ernst and Dr Cutler was speaking at a briefing at the Science Media Centre on alternative avian flu treatments.

They were looking at a number of products promoted as effective against the lethal H5N1 avian flu virus, such as oregano oil, aloe vera, cayenne pepper, royal jelly and green tea.
