Obesity may affect memory in diabetics

OBESITY - DIABETICS - MEMORY - STUDY - RISK

PETERBOROUGH -- Obesity could lead to impaired memory for people with Type 2 diabetes, a study by a Trent University research team suggests.

The team studied the effects of high-fat diets and obesity on learning and memory using rats as the model, said lead investigator Dr. Gordon Winocur.

"We have been finding some significant changes in their ability to learn new tasks and remember new information," said Winocur, a Trent psychology professor and senior scientist and vice-president of research at the Rotman Research Institute at the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care in Toronto.

The study was done using obese and lean rats that were put through a series of learning and memory recall exercises in a simple box environment outfitted with a retractable central feeder used as a food reward.

The obese rats were genetically engineered to be insulin resistant to mimic the human form of the early stages of Type 2 diabetes.

The rats underwent training to learn when to press a lever to receive food and when not to. The two groups of rats both scored well in training.

But in trials a day after the training, which tested their ability to remember what they had learned, the difference in memory function showed. The ability of the obese rats to recall specific information deteriorated as the time between trials was increased, Winocur said.

The type of memory loss indicates that memory controlled by the part of the brain called the hippocampus was impaired, the researchers found.

Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition that can be managed and treated, but can't be cured, Winocur said. He said the study has implications in terms of treatment because different aspects of the disease have to be treated separately.

"If we understand the nature of the cognitive impairment, then we have a better handle on what we can do as far as treatment is concerned."

The results support the Canadian Diabetes Association's emphasis on early diagnosis and management to prevent complications.
