WEIGHT LOSS - DAMAGE - HEALTH - CARDIOVASCULAR
By KARA PHILLIPS
ADELAIDE Researchers are testing the theory that losing weight can actually reverse heart damage in patients who have neglected their cardiovascular health.
A team of world class researchers at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and University of Adelaide, announced details of the groundbreaking new clinical trial at the Australasian Society for the Study of Obesity conference in Adelaide at the weekend.
RAH endocrinologist Gary Wittert, professor of medicine at the University of Adelaide, said the trial would look at more than 80 men and take more than two years to complete, but if successful could redefine how medical professionals treat heart problems.
"Treatment for heart disease and related illness currently requires substantial medications at a huge cost to the health system and individual," said Dr Wittert, who heads the study.
"Can you imagine the savings that could be made if the treatment is weight loss - if we can prove that losing weight can reverse the damage?
"We've had anecdotal evidence this is the case, but no proof."
The research team are using leading edge MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) techniques to look closely at the heart muscle and blood vessels in a group of significantly overweight men before and after they lose the desired amount of weight.
Professor Wittert said the men were required to lose at least 10 per cent of their body weight with the help of meal replacement KicStart, exercise, and a healthy diet.
Mr Wittert said baby boomers, who lead the way in Australia's obesity epidemic, stood to benefit most from this research.
A staggering 71.3 per cent of Australians aged 55 to 64 are classified as overweight or obese. He said many people in the baby boomer generation had been ignoring their weight for years, slowly damaging hearts and putting them at much greater risk of developing early heart disease. "If we can try to understand the relationship between obesity and weight then we can redefine treatment for these people."
ASSO Executive Officer Tim Gill said studies such as these were important with concerns the obesity epidemic was getting worse while the health system was failing to handle the situation.
